This century old wedding
cake slice was part of a 5ft tall white wedding cake weighing
more than 225 pounds. It is said that the cake was one of
the most grandiose of the Victorian era (1837—1901).

The cake was made in 1871
for the wedding ceremony of Princess Louise (born Louise Caroline
Alberta), the sixth child and fourth daughter of Queen Victoria,
and the Marquis of Lorne (born John George Edward Henry Douglas
Sutherland Campbell). The royal wedding was held on March
21, 1871 in St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle.
According to the book, “Royalty
in Canada : Embracing Sketches of the House of Argyll, the
Right Honorable the Marquis of Lorne (Governor-general of
Canada), Her Royal Highness the Princess Louise and the Members
of the New Government” by Charles Richard Tuttle, the
Queen’s chief confectioner made the 5-foot tall cake
for three months. The cake was embellished in white satin
decorated with the couple’s coat of arms.
The wedding of Princess
Louise and the Marquis of Lorne was controversial because
it was the first time that a member of the Royal Family married
someone recognized as a commoner since 1515.
The slice of the cake is
an inch wide and wrapped in parchment tied with strings. Also
contained in the packet is a piece of the cake of the christening
of John Earl Bainbridge same date. The cake was sold by antique
dealer John Shepherd for £145 (around Php. 10,237.00).
A press release from Antiques
for Everyone organizers stated that whoever buys the royal
cake should not eat it because it is unsafe to do so.
