The Unity Sand Ceremony serves as an alternative to the Unity Candle Ceremony when done outdoors, particularly during a beach wedding. The origin of the ceremony is vague, some tracing it to the Native Americans, others to the Hawaiians. Like the Unity Candle, the Sand Ceremony also symbolizes the unification of the bride and groom into one.
The Process
The bride and groom hold an individual vase containing colored sand. During the ceremony, the groom pours some of the sand from her container to the central vase. The bride pours her sand on the central vase afterwards creating two layers. To complete the ceremony, the bride and groom simultaneously pour their sand into the central vase. Since mixed sand cannot be separated and poured into individual containers, it serves as a perfect example of ‘two become one’.
